Council packs program to maximise repairs in one-month work window

Council is gearing up to begin a month of extensive roadworks in South Pottsville to repair Overall Drive and surrounding streets.

The roadworks are locked-in to start on Monday 16 September for completion by Sunday 13 October 2019.

“These works can now proceed following successful negotiations for a temporary relocation of a resident with serious health concerns,” Manager Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose said.

“To take full advantage of the relocation window, Council has brought forward a number of future planned works in South Pottsville for completion at the same time provided the weather and resources allow.”

Crews will be rostered seven days a week from 7am-5pm daily for the entire month. This does not mean all sites will be occupied all the time but rather that one or more sites could be occupied at any time.

The works include:

• removal and replacement of three mature trees along Overall Drive to allow heavy machinery access and due to root damage to infrastructure

• the stabilisation and resealing of Overall Drive, from Charles Street to Buckingham Drive

• asphalt reseal of two sections of Overall Drive, between Victoria Avenue and Edinburgh Court

• bitumen resealing of Tweed Coast Road from the Mooball Creek bridge to Black Rocks bridge, and

• asphalt rejuvenation of Mckenzie Avenue, Warne, O’Reilly, Miller and Kippax places, Taylor Drive and Trumper Place.

There will be significant traffic disruption on Overall Drive for the entire month as stabilisation works to repair soft spots in the road and then reapply an asphalt surface will take two to three weeks to complete with several ‘curing’ periods in between.

While the works will be undertaken in sections to allow detour opportunities and traffic controllers will be in place, motorists are advised to plan ahead to avoid likely long delays as some full road closures will be required.

At the other worksites, all efforts will be made to keep one lane of traffic open under the direction of stop / slow flagmen.

Motorists are advised to check the electronic message boards for updates as the works progress.

“The Pottsville community has been very patient over the past few years waiting for these much-needed roadworks to be undertaken, particularly on Overall Drive. While we’ll do what we can to limit the impact of these roadworks on the community, there is going to be significant disruption and inconvenience during this month,” Mr Rose said.

“But, with good weather and understanding residents and motorists, we will get it done and not have to return to the area for many years to come.”
