Apprenticeships and traineeships
We partner with Programmed to host fulltime apprentices and trainees
As a major employer in the region we recognise the importance of supporting people through apprenticeships.
Council looks for new apprentices around October and November each year.
Roles may include:
- electricians and carpenters
- welders and fabricators
- arborists and landscapers
- mechanics and engineers
- administrators and IT support
What experience or education do I need?
You must have successfully completed Year 10 or equivalent TAFE studies.
What’s involved in an apprenticeship at Council?
You will be mentored and trained by trade qualified Council staff. As well as on-the-job training, most trade apprentices also attend TAFE.
TAFE fees are paid for you and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uniforms are provided.
Will I have a job at the end of my apprenticeship?
Employment at Council is not guaranteed at the end of your apprenticeship. You can apply for any advertised positions that become available.
We recognise the unique skills and attributes demonstrated by ex- Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel in serving our country.
Opportunities are many and varied within Tweed Shire Council and Local Government.
The Local Government Rank to Grade Guide was developed to help both hiring managers and veterans understand how ADF skills and experience align with public sector jobs. This tool will help you identify where your skills and qualifications align you to.
The Local Government Capability Framework sets out the essential knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work effectively in Local Government. It outlines the requirements of Council roles and how veteran’s military experience can fulfil these needs at all employment levels.
Defence Members and Family Support has developed an ADF Member and Family Transition Guide which contains information on the transition process, as well as, information on support services and administrative requirements.
Education NSW offers fee-free training for all veterans and their recognised partners.
TAFE NSW Ranks to Recognition works in partnerships with NSW Office for Veterans Affairs to assist ADF veterans and their spouses and partners to transition into the civilian workforce. Ranks to Recognition offers a wraparound service including careers advice, skills assessment, credit transfer, recognition of prior learning (RPL) and training gap analysis to help identify the skills and knowledge acquired in the ADF.
Work experience applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
There is high demand for placements.
Priority is given to students who live or study in the Tweed.

- Linked to a course of study (senior high school, TAFE or university students)
- Paid work (based on study level)
- Often a university course requirement
- Length of time is set by course requirements
- Very limited placements available (field-based placements are not available)
How to apply
Submit your application at least 2 months before your requested start date.
Specify which area at Council you would like to do work experience, and what you hope to achieve. You will need to provide a cover letter and resume.
Before you start you must provide public liability documents from your study institution.
Allow up to 14 working days for a response.
If approved, a letter of offer will be sent to you with details of your placement.
From time to time there are paid cadetship opportunities at Council.
