A draft management plan for Hastings Point headland is currently on exhibition. The plan aims to respond to increasing visitation at the site.
Council is seeking community feedback on a draft management plan for Hastings Point headland from now until 27 June 2025. The draft Hastings Point Headland Management Plan was developed in response to increasing visitation at the site and aims to safeguard its natural environment and cultural heritage while improving function for all users. Tweed Shire Council’s Team Leader Coast and Waterways Tom Alletson said the draft plan reflects the input of more than 300 community members. “Hastings Point Headland is well-loved by the community and visitors,” said Mr Alletson. “But even the most respectful visitors can have an impact. Without thoughtful management, increased visitation could damage the values that make this area so unique. “This plan outlines Council’s proposed actions to protect the headland’s natural environment and cultural heritage, while improving how the site functions for all who use it. It’s about enhancing this beautiful, shared space for today and for generations to come with minimal change to the landscape itself.” The draft plan outlines the overall vision for the management of the Hastings Point headland area and includes:
Mr Alletson said the plan draws on feedback from a wide range of local voices, including residents, environmental groups, community organisations and visitors. “The draft management plan includes three options for managing vehicles on the top of the headland. Council knows that this is an issue of particular importance to the community, with a diversity of views on how cars should access the area. Three options are proposed for community feedback.” “This plan is a positive step forward in protecting this site’s unique and fragile ecosystem and ensuring its longevity. We strongly encourage the community to review the draft management plan to help us get it right." The scope of the draft plan includes the Hastings Point headland and carpark, Fig Tree Park, Cudgera Creek Park, Cudgera Creek (downstream of the Tweed Coast Road Bridge), the rocky foreshore surrounding Hastings Point headland and the land from the carpark at Peninsula Street to the northern side of the creek mouth.
