Tweed Shire Council is hosting two Climate Action Cafes next week to inspire residents to step up and support community-led climate initiatives.
Community members are invited to come along to a Climate Action Cafe event at the Murwillumbah Services Club on Wednesday 19 February or Cabarita Beach Bowls and Sports Club on Saturday 22 February.
These engaging sessions will provide a space for residents to share ideas, collaborate and help shape the future of climate action in the Tweed. Attendees will be asked to prioritise and support community-led projects which address local climate challenges.
Council’s Climate Change and Sustainability Program Leader Debbie Firestone said the events were open to everyone and encouraged residents to attend.
“These events are informal, fun workshops designed to encourage discussion and decision-making on local community-led climate priorities,” Ms Firestone said.
“The Tweed community has shown a willingness to embrace solutions which preserve and improve the region for everyone. We have the highest uptake of rooftop solar in the Northern Rivers, the biggest increase in electric vehicle ownership and a high level of involvement by the community in wildlife and biodiversity conservation efforts.
“The Tweed is unfortunately one of the most climate vulnerable locations in New South Wales. Many of us know first-hand the impact of extreme weather events on our homes, businesses, natural environment and personal wellbeing. And many of us also know how generously we rally together during extreme weather events.
“As a community, ingenuity and can-do attitude is part of our local essence. It’s this willingness to roll-up our sleeves and act that Council is seeking to support at our Climate Action Cafes.
“If you have an idea for a project that can make a difference, we’d love you to join us. Likewise, if you don’t have an idea, but are keen to be part of a positive change and willing to get involved, come along and help shape collective action.”
Key topics to be explored at the events include:
- Biodiversity, coasts and waterways
- Energy, water and buildings
- Food systems and agriculture
- Waste and circular economy
- Education and climate conversations
Projects most supported by participants will be fostered by the new Community Climate Action Group who will be available as leaders, mentors or supporters of these projects.
The Community Climate Action Group was recently formed after receiving 33 applications to join the group, showing that interest is high in the community for getting involved.
Project ideas will be developed into a Community Climate Action Plan.
