Wildlife friendly festive lighting

Tips to support local wildlife

  • Don’t leave lights on all-night. Instead, have lights on only for a few hours after dark. If possible, use a timer.
  • Avoid having lights on during dusk or dawn as this is when animals such as birds are most active.
  • Use warm coloured and low intensity lights instead of bright white or blue lights, as these are less harmful to wildlife.
  • Avoid lighting up trees and shrubs where nocturnal animals may reside.  Keep these areas as dark as possible.
  • When using spotlights, keep them angled downward and focused only where you need them. Ensure lights aren't pointed into the sky or at nearby trees, shrubs or bushland.
