‘No Stopping’ signs have been erected at the northern end of Leeward Terrace at Tweed Heads to allow safe access to services on the street.
The signs have been erected approximately 20 metres ahead of the concrete barricades recently erected to separate the Queensland and NSW border and are intended to prevent parked vehicles blocking the street for turning vehicles.
The signs are not adjacent to residential properties and residents are not expected to be impacted by this decision.
Director of Engineering David Oxenham said the measure had been introduced to allow large service vehicles, particularly waste disposal trucks, enough space to safely turn around in the street.
“The border barrier has temporarily created a dead end road, making it difficult for our large waste services trucks to safely turn around in the street,” Mr Oxenham said.
“What is already a tight turn for the trucks is made more difficult if vehicles are parked on either side of the road and blocking the way.
“This has forced our contractor’s drivers to perform 7-point turns on Leeward Terrace at times and this is an unsafe situation for residents, pedestrians, other motorists and our contractors.”
Mr Oxenham said the new parking restrictions should also benefit other service providers.
“Our staff have observed other essential service providers with large vehicles having difficulties turning around at the border barrier,” he said.
“We’re appealing to all motorists to refrain from parking in the new ‘No Stopping’ areas to keep everyone safe.”
Council rangers will be monitoring the area to ensure the restrictions are adhered to.
