The excitement in the air is palpable, with Christmas and the holiday break just around the corner.
While this time of year means different things for each of us, it’s time to stop and reflect, time to reconnect with family and friends, time to rest.
It has been a challenging year and I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone out there: from our residents who have been through so much this year, to our staff at Council who put in their all every day – thank you for your energy, your compassion and your kindness in dealing with each other.
The year 2022 has been a difficult one for so many in our community who were impacted first by the ongoing border closures as a result of COVID-19 and then, not much later, by the devastating flood that hit our region at the end of February and into March.
I have been inspired by people’s willingness to help one another, by people’s ability to pick themselves back up and to come together when it was needed most.
The flood recovery process has been a long one for us all and will continue into the new year as some of the more complex repair work and decisions come to a head. I look forward to completing this process and moving forward with hope and renewed appreciation for the place we call home.
Never have I been so proud to be a Tweed resident and to represent such a wonderful community.
Let’s look towards 2023 and all the opportunities it will bring.
On behalf of Council staff and my fellow Councillors, I hope that over the holiday season, each of you has some time to rest, to relax and to celebrate being together in this incredible community.
Merry Christmas one and all!
– Mayor of Tweed Shire Chris Cherry
