Tropical Cyclone Alfred - conserving and storing water

07 March 2025

Filling a pot with tap water in kitchen

Widespread power outages are threatening water supply in the Tweed and if we continue to use water at our usual rate, then we run the risk of draining some of our supplies and needing to revert to boiling drinking water.

Tap water is still safe to drink at this point.

Limit your household water use to drinking, cooking and essential hygiene needs. Now is not the time to fill bathtubs but instead to conserve the water you’re using. For the sake of the whole community, please restrict your water use.

It’s a good idea to have some water stored in case the main tap water supply is disrupted. Here’s what to do:

  • store 3 days of drinking water (at least 10 litres per person) – keep enough for your household, there’s no need to stockpile excessive amounts
  • use clean, sealed containers like reusable water bottles, jugs, kettles, large plastic storage bottles or even cooking pots with lids
  • if you have space, freeze some water—it will help keep food cool if the power goes out.
