Council inspected the downslope slip soon after ex‑Cyclone Alfred. Water‑filled barriers were placed along the road shoulders to reduce the immediate risk to drivers.
On advice from a geotechnical consultant, Council has moved traffic lanes away from the slip by narrowing and adjusting the road layout. Because of this, the speed limit is now 40 km/h. These temporary changes will stay in place until full restoration work is finished.
Council is now undertaking design and investigation works to stabilise the slip and begin permanent repairs.

- Areas within Poinciana Avenue easement and Ti Tree Avenue easement will be barricaded off, preventing public access.
- No pedestrian access via the easement during construction. Pedestrians will be directed to use Poinciana Avenue/ Ti Tree Avenue/ Hastings Road/Towners Avenue
- When crews trench across Ti Tree Avenue, they will close half the road and work to the centreline before switching traffic and working from the centreline to the shoulder of the road. At these times, two-way traffic flow will be directed through one side of the road.

Impacts:
Stormwater upgrades have been completed along Hunter Street, near the Dignan Street intersection, to reduce flooding and improve drainage. As part of the environmental restoration, native vegetation – including threatened species – has been replanted and the site is under ongoing maintenance. Temporary fencing and signage are in place and there is no pedestrian access through the restoration area.

Byrrill Creek Road will be reduced to one lane, including outside work hours.
Temporary lane closures may be required at times causing delays of up to 15 minutes.
Traffic lights will be in place to manage traffic for the entire duration of the works, including after hours.

Temporary road closure:
- Byrrill Creek Road will be fully closed between 9 am and 3 pm for 4 days from Tuesday 22 September to Friday 25 September 2026.
- No vehicles will be able to pass through the work site during these closure times.
- The closure is needed for tree removal, installation of a new pipe across the road, and construction work on the existing gabion wall.
- Residents west of the work site will need to use an alternative route via Tyalgum.
- We've made plans for emergency vehicles to pass through the site.
- Pedestrian movement may be directed or restricted.

Final concrete poured Byrrill Creek Bridge
The 4-lane upgrade of 6.1 km of Tweed Coast Road, has an estimated roadworks cost of $79 million. The project will be delivered in 6 sections with the widening of sections 5 & 6, from the M1 roundabout at Chinderah to the Cudgen Road, Cudgen now underway. Preliminary work to identify services and tree clearing along the route has been completed.

Bridgeworks
Wollumbin Street, Murwillumbah
What’s happening:
- bridge cleaning and repairs of concrete piers under the bridge

generally, work will be carried out under the bridge. The project team will access the piers via boat from a temporary pontoon.

Project update Wednesday 23 September 2026

The works are now complete, but the newly seeded areas need some time to recover. Please help us protect the new landscaping by not parking on these areas while the grass grows back.
The Blacks Drain upgrade on Tweed Valley Way in South Murwillumbah is a $2.56 million project to restore and strengthen the road after it was badly damaged in the 2017 and 2022 floods. A temporary repair was put in place after those events, and work is now starting on a permanent, flood‑resilient solution.
From 15 June 2026 site setup and surveying will take place with traffic reduced to one lane from early July 2026. The project will take about 20 weeks, weather permitting.
Work hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm. Works may need to be conducted some Saturdays, between 7 am to 1 pm.

Why were these works delayed?
We want to let you know that work to rejuvenate Piggabeen Road has been delayed because of unseasonably wet weather.
The road treatment we planned to use is a specialised 2-coat spray seal that can only be applied in warm weather. It was chosen because it gives the best long-term result for Piggabeen Road. Our aim was to complete this work in early May, but the heavy and ongoing rain has pushed us into the colder months. Because of this, we now need to wait until Spring 2026 to return and complete the seal.
We know many residents and road users rely on Piggabeen Road every day, and we want you to know that we genuinely care about both your safety and the condition of the road. We understand how important this route is to your daily life, and we share your frustration about the delay. Our goal is to deliver a long-lasting, high-quality result, and waiting for the right weather conditions is the best way to make sure the work is done properly.
We understand this delay is frustrating. Please know that Piggabeen Road remains a priority for Council.
