Bruce Chick Park car park upgrade and kayak launch site

Bruce-Chick.png

We upgraded a section of the car park at Bruce Chick Park, located at Stotts Creek beside the Tweed River. The project improved the car park’s visual appeal, enhanced accessibility for all visitors, and strengthened its resilience to future weather events.

Located near the Stotts Island Nature Reserve, the upgraded car park continues to serve as a convenient launch point for kayaks and canoes, offering a scenic 2–3 hour paddle around Stotts Island.

Project schedule

  • Planning: End 2024
  • Construction: Project completed 2025

Works included

  • Installed a new asphalt access road with concrete edging
  • Added a new stormwater pipe and associated headwalls
  • Removed an existing tree to allow for the new drainage headwall
  • Constructed a kayak/canoe launching ramp and connecting concrete footpath (funded through a separate Boating Now grant from Transport for NSW)

Why it happened

Severe weather and flooding in 2022 caused major damage to the internal access road and car park, including surface erosion and subsidence. The upgrade addressed these issues and improved the car park’s overall functionality and durability.

How it’s getting done

Budget: Car park $132,000, Kayak launch site $200,000

Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.
