Beach wheelchairs

Book a beach wheelchair and enjoy a great day at the beach with family and friends.

Chairs are free to hire and can be borrowed by a support person for use by persons aged 5 and over with a disability.

Council has 5 beach wheelchairs available for use at the following locations:

• Fingal Head Beach*
• Cabarita Beach*
• Pottsville*
• Tweed Heads – Jack Evans Boat Harbour (JEBH) Central Beach*
• Tweed Heads South (all-terrain chair – not for use in water).

The Tweed Heads South all-terrain chair may be transported for use within the Tweed Shire.

*The Fingal Head Beach, Cabarita Beach, Pottsville and JEBH Central Beach wheelchairs must be used in a specific area (they must not be removed from that area or transported elsewhere).

JEBH Central Beach wheelchair can be booked online, self‑collected and returned to the on-site housing unit. Please bring a life jacket which must be worn by the wheelchair user if entering the water.

Please be aware that the beach wheelchairs listed above that are not self‑service are coordinated by generous community volunteers who may not always be readily available. We encourage you to organise your beach wheelchair hire well in advance of visiting the respective locations to secure your booking.

All beach wheelchairs require an assistant or carer during use.

What types of wheelchairs can I book?

You can book a FreeWheel beach wheelchair at our Pottsville, Cabarita and Fingal Head hire locations. A FreeWheel has soft balloon tyres that roll easily over sand and can be used in low waves.

At Tweed Heads South, you can book an all‑terrain wheelchair equipped with all‑terrain wheels designed to navigate bumpy and uneven surfaces, including sand.

At Tweed Heads (JEBH Central Beach), you can book the Hippocampe beach wheelchair designed for use on sand, pathways and in the water. This chair helps improve water access for everyone and is suitable for both adults and children, ensuring all visitors can enjoy the harbour.

At Tweed Heads you can book an all-terrain wheelchair which has all-terrain wheels which can ride over bumpy and uneven surfaces such as sand.
