Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Project

Indigenous art and culture is inherent in our local community's identity, and a core part of what is distinctive about the Tweed.

An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Issues Paper commissioned by Council in 2000 identified Council’s role in supporting indigenous cultural life, as well as the need to deliver indigenous specific cultural opportunities. Council now wishes to initiate new and fruitful partnerships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and the wider community.

The Tweed Shire City of the Arts 2003 - 2005 Aboriginal and Torrest Strait Islander Program will prove to be a ground breaking initiative. The two-year program of cultural activities will nurture skills and training development, economic return and better appreciation of the proud history and heritage of our local indigenous culture.

The program is outcomne orientated and will be managed, delivered and produced by engaging innovative and highly skilled Aboriginal and Islander arts workers in all phases of the project.he Tweed and surrounding Northern Rivers is home to a number of exceptional indigenous linguists, performers, set designers, musicians and arts administrators.
