Methane Power Plant at the Stotts Creek Landfill
Food scraps and garden waste rot in the landfill to produce methane gas. Methane gas emissions into the atmosphere have >20 times more impact on global warming than carbon dioxide emissions.
In February 2005 Tweed Shire Council and Landfill Management Systems completed the last stage of a methane co-generation facility at the Stotts Creek Landfill. Methane is harvested from rubbish in the landfill and burnt to produce electricity. This electricity is then put into the grid. More than 55,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution (CO2e) have been prevented from entering the atmosphere so far (March 2007).
You can help to reduce methane emissions into the atmosphere by composting your food / garden waste and by requesting a green waste bin from council.
