Water Pricing
User pays water pricing was introduced in the Tweed Shire in 2002.
Properties connected to the town water supply are charged for every 1,000 litres of water consumed.
User pays is a key component of the demand management strategy as it encourages water conservation - the less you use the less you pay.
Listed to the right is a history of water prices since user pays was introduced.
To encourage water conservation, high residential consumers are subject to a 50% step price increase for consumption in excess of 300 kL per year. From July 2011, residential water use is subject to a charge of $1.85 per kL for usage up to 300 kL per year and $2.80 per kL for usage in excess of 300 kL per year.
