Many things we consider 'waste' can actually be re-used or recycled – disposal should be the last option, and the more we can keep out of landfill the better.
Council runs a number of free recycling collection days, which are advertised in the Tweed Link. These days are scheduled before the bi-annual kerbside cleanup.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these collections in the months preceding the kerbside cleanup, to ensure items are not unnecessarily going to landfill.
Please click on the headings below for information regarding the free recycling collection days available to Tweed Shire residents.
Metal Recycling
A free collection is available to Tweed Shire residents all year round, by phoning Council on (02) 6670 2400 or 1300 292 872 to leave your details and a description of the materials to be collected.
Items such as derelict motor vehicles, unwanted farm machinery and unwanted white goods such as old washing machines, fridges and freezers, can be collected. Please note this service does not include gas bottles. Residents can take empty gas bottles to Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre free of charge for recycling.
Collections are carried out by an external contractor, who will contact you to arrange a suitable time to collect the items from your property – free of charge. All metal items collected are then sent to processors to be recycled. Phone the above number for more information on what can be collected through this service.
eWaste (Electrical Waste)
Tweed residents can take their e-waste items into the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre collection point for free, all year round.
Items that can be accepted in E-waste include:
- Computer equipment – desktop PCs, laptops, monitors, hard drives, keyboards, computer mice, computer power supplies, network and memory cards, floppy disc and CD drives.
- Business and home office equipment – printers, scanners, mobile phones, photocopiers, fax machines, answering machines, telephones, electronic games and toys – joysticks and computer game consoles.
- Entertainment equipment – televisions, videos, DVD players, hi-fi equipment, stereos, speakers, digital cameras and video cameras.
The following will not be accepted:
- Gas bottles
- Batteries
- White goods
- Smoke detectors
- Fluorescent light tubes
- Vacuums, microwaves and other kitchen household appliances.
Household Chemical Collection
Council is currently working to establish a permanent collection point at Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre for all year round drop off. An interim collection event may occur this year, with dates advertised on this site and in the Tweed Link.
The aim of this collection is to reduce the amount of toxic substances we send to landfill by diverting them to proper facilities that can safely treat them and hopefully prepare many of them for re-use or recycling.
Household quantities of up to 20 litres of household chemicals will be accepted. Products such as paint and paint-related products, pesticides, herbicides and poisons, solvents and household cleaners, pool chemicals, acids and alkalis and hobby chemicals, can be dropped off on the Household Chemical Collection days.
drumMUSTER
Farmers and residents in the Tweed Shire can bring their empty plastic and metal drums displaying the drumMUSTER logo along to DrumMuster collection days at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre for inspection and collection. Special collection days are scheduled twice a year, usually during April and December, and are advertised in the Tweed Link.
All drums must be correctly cleaned both inside and out (including caps and threads) and allowed to drain or air dry to ensure no rinse water or dry chemical residue remains (in line with Agsafe Standard for Effective Rinsing of Farm Chemical Containers brochure available from chemical retail outlets). Lids must be removed and steel drums punctured at the base.
Unclean or partly filled containers will not be accepted and will remain the property of the chemical user.
Collection during the year is available by appointment only – phone the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre to arrange this on (02) 6670 7400. The above conditions apply.
For more information phone Council’s Waste Management Unit (02) 6670 2694.
Greenwaste
The green waste wheelie bin is a 240L optional user-pays service available only to residents and commercial properties within the current urban service area. To organise this service or find out if it is available in your area, phone Council on (02) 6670 2400 or 1300 292 872. Tenants should note that Council requires the property owner’s or the Real Estate Agent’s permission before a green waste service can be placed on the property.
This bin is for grass clippings and garden prunings only, which is collected and processed. The shredded green waste is available for sale at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre.
Alternatively, compost your garden prunings! Compost bins and worm farms are available for sale at the Tweed Civic Centre, Murwillumbah Civic Centre and the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre. Please note that the compost bin available is a 240L bin which is 80cm high and 85cm wide at the base (diagonal measurement). It may not fit into some cars for transporting home.
