As a result of the expanding population in the Tweed area, increasing pressures are being placed on local resources and infrastructure.

In particular, there is increasing demand being placed on waste management services. As such, this is an area that Tweed Shire Council has identified as being of high priority to address.

Based upon Council data, it is predicted that Council’s existing landfill, Stott’s Creek landfill, is nearing capacity and is expected to be full by 2011. Council has been acquiring land in close proximity to this site for the purposes of investigation for use for future landfill area.

Under the Tweed Local Environmental Plan 2000 (LEP), the land owned by Council is appropriately zoned (5(a) Special Purposes) for the purposes of developing a landfill. Tweed Shire Council is proceeding with investigation and design. This land is earmarked for the future Tweed Botanic Gardens.
