Tweed's Multi-bin System

Tweed Shire Council uses a Multi-bin System to collect residential and commercial waste and recyclables.

This system was introduced in December 2009 to help Tweed residents recycle better and reduce what is sent to landfill. The system includes the following set of bins:

  • 140 L red lid bin for the collection of garbage (80 L and 240 L bins are also available - different charges apply), and a
  • 240 L yellow lid bin to collect all household recyclables. Please note: There is no option to swap the size of the recycling bin, however additional services can be ordered through Council.

To find out when your next collection day is or to download your street's yearly collection calendar, click on the 'Waste Collection Days' tab to the left.

As servicing times may vary, you need to make sure your bins are out before 6am of your collection day or the night before.

Bin weights: As a guide, the collection vehicle can service a bin of up to approximately 60kg. If the bin is difficult to wheel to the kerb due to weight, it may be too heavy and at risk of not being collected. Remove some items and place the lighter bin at the kerb ready for collection.

These bins are collected by two different trucks - one to collect rubbish from all red lid bins and one to collect recyclables from all yellow lid bins.

Service

Residents and commercial properties within urban areas of the current green waste service area can also receive an optional, user-pays 240 L green lid bin for garden prunings. For this financial year (2011/2012) the cost of the green waste service is $52 for the full year pro rata. Please note, this is not a composting service so food waste cannot go into this bin. The garden waste from this bin is mulched at the Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre and the mulch is made available for sale to the community.

Do the right thing with your bin

  • Keep your bins at least 50cm apart (preferably one metre apart where possible) and free from obstacles such as cars and trees.
  • Place your bin out for collection with the wheels facing away from the kerb.
  • Your bin needs to be put out before 6 am on your collection day or the night before, as collection times may vary.
  • Ensure the lid of your bin can close - overfull or contaminated bins will not be collected.

Benefits of a Multi-bin System

Better recycling – less waste to landfill

The majority of most people's waste can be recycled. The larger 240L bin for recycling provides a greater space to pack recyclables into.

Less contamination of recycling

Having separate, dedicated bins makes it more obvious that the two are for two different types of waste. With the previous split bin system, overflow of general rubbish into the recycling section was a common cause of contaminated recyclables. If recyclables become too contaminated, they need to be disposed of in landfill.

In 2005, the amount of recyclables contaminated was 15 per cent. This reduced to 12 per cent in 2009 and since the introduction of the Multi-bin System in December 2009, the contamination rate has dropped to four per cent.

Standard Australian colours for bins

Being consistent with messages and colours across the country makes the bins easier for everyone to use. Confusion over which bin to use often leads to a loss of, or contamination of recyclables. The colours used for the bins are in-line with Australian Standards, with yellow for recycling, red for garbage and green for green waste.

What can I put into each bin?

To find out what can and cannot go into each bin, download the Multi-bin System Brochure on the top-right of this page.
