Kirkwood Road Extension
Kirkwood Road, in Tweed Heads South, is being extended to create a more efficient road network in the Tweed district.
The extended road will provide another access to the Pacific Highway and the South Tweed business precinct, relieving pressure from Minjungbal Drive, which is nearing its capacity.
This $34.5m project is the first stage of the Pacific Highway Road Network Master Plan, to deal with the shire’s growing population.
Kirkwood Road is currently a two-lane road from Minjungbal Drive in the east to Falcon Way, and continues as an unmade road reserve either side of the Pacific Highway to Fraser Drive in the west.
A steady rise in traffic volumes on Minjungbal Drive and the Pacific Highway has Minjungbal Drive at or nearing its capacity.
A second interchange at Kirkwood Road has been included in the Pacific Highway Network Master Plan to relieve this situation.
Construction of the eastern section of Kirkwood Road, from Falcon Way to the Pacific Highway, is anticipated to start in the first half of 2011.
Maps of the proposed extension can be downloaded below or they can be viewed at Tweed Shire Council’s offices at Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah.
