Tweed Shire Council provides a wide range of services for the benefit of the community, including managing and maintaining infrastructure such as:

  • Waste collection, recycling & street cleaning
  • Sewerage treatment plants
  • Filtration plants
  • Water reservoirs
  • Sewer pumping stations
  • Water pumping stations
  • Water mains
  • Sewer mains
  • Local roads, bridges, footpaths, kerb and guttering, signage and drainage maintenance, cycleways, pool complexes
  • Parks, playgrounds, gardens, sports fields, cycleways, skateparks and reserves
  • Libraries, childcare centres, range of community Services (for elderly & youth)
  • Community festivals arts and cultural assistance, and visitor information centre
  • Town planning, landscaping, development applications / building inspections / construction certificates
  • and many others...

To provide these and other important services and to manage and maintain community facilities, Tweed Shire Council must raise sufficient funds. One of the ways in which Tweed Shire Council does this is through its statutory power to charge “council rates”. Whilst Tweed Shire Council receives money from other sources such as grants, fees, loans and contributions, a large portion of Councils funds comes from rates.
