Bananas Exhibition
Held: 19-29 August, 2006 at Murwillumbah Museum
As part of the Banana Festival, 2006, Tweed River Regional Museum at Murwillumbah hosted a small exhibition relating to the banana growing industry in the Tweed.
The display included objects and historic photos of banana farmers and families, the banana festival and photos of Banana Queens from the 1950's. Bananas were first grown commercially in the Tweed valley in the 1890s at Duranbah, Terranora and Bilambil. The industry grew steadily until 1920, when bunchy top disease first appeared, and by 1922 this disease had destroyed 90% of the crop. Fortunately, by 1928 the disease was under control and the growing began again, continuing through until the present day.
