Wastewater Treatment
Wastewater is defined as the water borne wastes of a community. It contains approximately 99.9% pure water and 0.1% pollutants by weight.
Wastewater comes from residences, local commercial and light industrial sites such as clubs, caravan parks, restaurants, commercial laundries, oil company retail outlets and hospitals but it does not include roof water or surface runoff.
Council employs a range of wastewater treatment processes to remove the waste from the water so the water can be safely reused or returned to the environment.
Do you know which Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) your household is serviced by? Knowing where your wastewater goes is an important part of being a water wise Tweed resident.
Banora Point WWTP: In 1995 the WWTP off Enterprise Avenue, Tweed Heads South was upgraded to service Banora Point, Tweed Heads South and surrounding areas. Wastewater is treated to tertiary standards and discharged into Terranora Inlet near the Dry Dock.
Tweed Heads West WWTP: In 2008 the WWTP off Grey Street, Tweed Heads West was decommissioned. Tweed Heads, Tweed Heads West and Bilambil Heights are now serviced by the Banora Point WWTP.
Hastings Point WWTP: In 2004 the WWTP was upgraded and is located on the Round Mountain Road at Hastings Point. It is a conventional gravity system with pump stations and services Hastings Point, Bogangar/Cabarita and Pottsville. Treated Effluent is discharged to an exfiltration zone in the beach dunes east of the plant.
Kingscliff WWTP: In 2008 the new WWTP off Crescent Street, Cudgen was completed to service Kingscliff and surrounding areas. Wastewater is treated to advanced tertiary standards and discharged into the Tweed River south of the intersection of Chinderah Bay Drive and Wommin Bay Road. The improved quality of discharge will provide reuse opportunities for non residential purposes.
Murwillumbah WWTP: In 2007 the WWTP off Frances Street was upgraded to achieve advanced tertiary treatment standards. This upgrade has improved discharge quality into the Rous River and allows for a significant volume of the treated wastewater to be reused in the Condong Sugar Mill cooling towers as part of its electricity generation initiative.
Tumbulgum WWTP: In 1996 a WWTP was constructed off Tweed Valley Way to service Tumbulgum village. Wastewater is treated to tertiary standards and discharged in to the Tweed River east of the village.
Uki WWTP: In 2004 a WWTP was constructed off Smiths Creek Road to service Uki village. Wastewater is treated to secondary standards and discharged to on-site plantation irrigation.
Tyalgum WWTP: In 1990 a WWTP was constructed off Brays Creek Road to service Tyalgum village. Wastewater is treated to secondary standards and discharged via on-site pasture irrigation.
