The Tweed River Festival is a celebration of environment and community.
Held in spring each year, the River Festival is an opportunity to share and discover some of the secrets of the Tweed River and coastal estuaries.
It’s also an opportunity to reflect on the issues affecting the shire's waterways and what can be done to address them.
The week-long Tweed River Festival culminates with a family afternoon in the park finishing with a lantern parade and a fireworks spectacular just after dark. So pack a hamper, grab a picnic blanket and come see the river in a different light.

Volunteers
Lantern Parade Volunteers

Volunteers make the Tweed River Festival the success it is today. Volunteers are an important part of the lantern parade, teaming up to carry the big headliner lanterns (this is a lot of fun, especially if you volunteer with family or friends) or paddling their own canoes as a backdrop to the lantern parade.

The Lantern Parade is not to be missed. Come and see the dancing fish, the luminescent jelly’s, four legged creatures of all shapes and sizes and the combined spectacular of hundreds of small lanterns made by local school children in the weeks leading up to the parade.
To be part of the action, for a small fee you can even decorate your own lantern at the lantern making workshop earlier in the day.
Wetland Walks

The wetland walks are an opportunity to see the Tweed River and its ecosystems through the eyes of an ecologist and the local bird-watching group. The guided wetland walks are flat grade, usually 2km or 4km in length. A no fee activity, bookings are essential. Refer to the Event Program (381kb) for walk dates/times/locations.

Catchment Catch-up
There’s a lot going on in catchment management and bushland restoration in the Tweed Shire.
The Catchment Catch-up is an opportunity to hear about on-ground projects to protect and restore the Tweed River and coastal creek catchments. It’s also a great opportunity to network with natural resource management (NRM) practitioners such as bush regenerators, researchers and policy developers.

Tweed River Committee

The Tweed River Committee was formed in 1992 to implement a multi-stakeholder approach to waterway health. It comprises of Community Representatives, State Government Agencies, Councillors and Tweed Shire Council staff. The committee meets bi-monthly and advises Council on issues related to the implementation of the Tweed Estuary Management Plan and Tweed Vegetation Management Strategy. Projects which address issues such as water quality, river bank stability, recreational use and education are initiated by the committee.
