Becoming an Australian Citizen

For information on how to become an Australian citizen visit www.citizenship.gov.au or phone 131 880.

Applicants must book an appointment to sit the citizenship test prior to lodging an application. The two closet centres to the Tweed Shire where testing is conducted are:

Centrelink Office - Tweed Heads South
110 Blundell Boulevarde
TWEED HEADS SOUTH NSW 2485

Department of Immigration and Citizenship
Ground Floor
299 Adelaide Street
BRISBANE QLD 4000

After successfully completing the citizenship test and lodgement of an application, the Department of Immigration & Citizenship will assess the information.

Once your application has been approved, your Certificate of Australian Citizenship is forwarded to Council. Council offers new citizens the opportunity of either attending a public presentation ceremony, usually held every 3-4 months or having a private presentation ceremony with the Mayor. A special ceremony is held on Australia Day. New citizens are invited to bring along family and friends to share the occasion.

So, in short, the steps to follow to become an Australian Citizen are:

  1. Make an appointment to sit the citizenship test.
  2. Lodge your application for citizenship grant.
  3. Await confirmation advice from the Department of Immigration & Citizenship that your application has been successful.
  4. Await advice from the Council confirming that relevant paperwork has been received and the date of the next citizenship ceremony.
  5. Confirm your attendance at the ceremony (or make arrangements for a more suitable date) and advise number of guests you would like to bring with you to your citizenship ceremony.
  6. Enjoy your ceremony with family, friends and other new Australian citizens.
