Australia Day Awards Nominations
Australia Day is celebrated on 26 January with a public holiday. Council supports small community events held around the Tweed on that day that range from breakfast barbeques to damper contests and social sporting games. Details of what’s happening are available on Council’s website from late December.
A call for nominations for the Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards happens each year from October to early December. The nomination form can be downloaded here Australia Day Awards Nomination Form (78kB)
or is available from Council offices and libraries. All nominations are welcome.
The completed form must be emailed, posted or dropped into Council by the due date.
The Australia Day Committee selects the Tweed Shire Australia Day Award winners at their December meeting and they are presented with their awards at the
main Australia Day event held on Australia Day. The main Australia Day event is held in a different part of the Shire each year and this is announced in the program.
A primary school competition with prizes for art and essays is held each year on a theme related to Australia Day.
Information is sent to schools after the October school holidays each year.
At the main Australia Day event the Mayor of Tweed also conducts a citizenship ceremony welcoming around 30 new Australia citizens living in the Tweed. Information regarding applying for citizenship is available from the Department of Immigration web site www.citizenship.gov.au or by phone 131 880.
