Exhibitions Background
The Tweed River Art Gallery opened in 1988 and is operated by the Tweed Shire Council with support from the NSW Ministry for the Arts.
The Gallery aims to promote a greater understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts in the community and to acquire, preserve, display and conserve the region’s visual arts heritage.
Objectives of the Temporary Exhibitions Policy
- to provide access to exhibitions of regional and national significance;
- to enable the Tweed River Art Gallery to exhibit good quality exhibitions that extend the audiences understanding and appreciation of the visual arts and related fields;
- to enable exhibitions of an educational and museological nature as well as of importance in visual arts and related fields such as design and craft;
- to enable Tweed River Art Gallery to exhibit works in a wide range of media.
The Exhibitions Program will aim to include a wide range of topics/media within a twenty-four month period including (but not limited to) the following:
- art prizes
- ceramics
- design
- drawing
- fashion
- fibre
- glass
- jewellery
- local craft
- museological interest
- new media
- painting
- photography
- printmaking
- regional/topical relevance
- sculpture
- student work
- wood art & craft
The program will aim to include a balance of male and female, local, interstate and international artists; and the Gallery will have a mix of exhibitions in the following six exhibition galleries:
- The Temporary Exhibitions Gallery - temporary exhibitions
- The Boyd Gallery - includes the Community Access Exhibitions Program
- The Macnaughton Focus Gallery - includes the Quick Response Exhibitions Program
- Withey Family Gallery – permanent display of portraits from the Australian Portrait Collection
- The Friends Gallery – works on paper from the Collection
- The Anthony Gallery – landscapes from the Collection

- Australian Portraits from the Collection a selection of works from the Gallery’s Collection
- Temporary exhibitions curated from the Gallery’s growing Collection including landscapes, prints, wood, ceramics and glass
