The effect of the proposed 6% increase will be that 83% of ratepayers will pay around $1.00 per week extra for each year of the program.

To fund economic development projects in the proposed plan the average business rate could increase by $250 per assessment.

It also means

An acceleration of the provision of much-needed infrastructure and services.
At present Tweed Shire Council has no budget for the installation of new street lights. Under the proposed 7 Year Plan Council will be able to have Country Energy install five or six new lights a year.
The proposed allocation of $3,665,900 in the Plan over 7 years will allow the resurfacing of approximately 25kms of road per year, a 66% increase on the current level.
The planned allocation of $2,450,000 in the Plan over 7 years will allow the repair of approximately 1.4kms of footpath per year, a 33% increase on the current level.

There are several ways Tweed Shire residents can have their say

  • For enquiries use the hotline number 1800 709 188.
  • Residents may also be contacted by phone by Market Facts, an independent company doing a random survey but asking the same questions.
  • The survey must be returned by April 21, 2006.
